I am back out on the road today. I have a 9AM train to Washington, DC where I will be through Thursday for an industry conference and trade show. Four solid days of working our booth... woohoo. Posts on my part may be few and far between. These events tend to involve 14+ hour days when you include in all of the post-session networking events. However, hopefully you will be hearing from Jay in my absence. I may also try to sneak in a post every now and then.
On Thursday, I will head from DC to Pennsyltucky to spend part of the 4th of July weekend (Jay D's b-day is on the 4th BTW - make sure you wish him a happy, happy) with my family. I hope to head back to the city in time to spend the 4th with some friends... perhaps at the beach as we have been discussing.
OK, this is a little scary. The government is just out of control. The lack of honesty, ethics and decency demonstrated by this Bush Administration is overwhelming. I am convinced, now more than ever, that W and his merry band of civil rights-ignoring crackpots really do believe that 9/11 gave them free run to do whatever they damn well please, whether it is right/legal or not... all in the name of defending America from terrorism.
There is no excuse for the Pentagon to be databasing information on millions of high school students, aged 16 to 18, including names, dates of birth, genders, addresses, Social Security numbers, e-mail addresses, ethnicity, telephone numbers, and even grade point averages. And how many people know that a little-known provision in the 2002 "No Child Left Behind" education law requires every public school to provide the military with the names, addresses and phone numbers of students?
I know it is still only June, but college football enthusiasts (like myself) are on pins and needles awaiting the upcoming football season. My beloved Pitt Panthers have a new coach and a new look for the upcoming season. They start this season off with a bang on 9/3 with a the evil Fighting Irish of Notre Dame coming to Heinz Field for a prime time game on ABC.
Hail to Pitt, hail to Pitt every loyal son Hail to Pitt, hail to Pitt 'til the victory is won The gold and blue shall wave forever On high through fair and stormy weather We'll sing her praises far and wide Until the end of time Hooperay, hooperay for dear old U-N-I We'll give a grand old alleghenee, genac, genac, genac We'll wave and cheer for many a year And sing our songs out loud and clear For our university.
The spawn of Satan, Karl Rove, was in NYC last night at a meeting of the Conservative Party. I can't believe conservatives attack Howard Dean for comments he made about Republicans, but nobody will say anything about what Rove says when generalizing about Liberals.
"Has there ever been a more revealing moment this year?" Mr. Rove asked. "Let me just put this in fairly simple terms: Al Jazeera now broadcasts the words of Senator Durbin to the Mideast, certainly putting our troops in greater danger. No more needs to be said about the motives of liberals. (emphasis added)"
"Liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers."
Now I think that is far more offensive than anything the misguided Chair of the DNC might have said about Republicans. Will you see the same people who criticized Dean for his remarks attacking Rove's comments? Absolutely not! Weak. Weak as water.
I have long suspected that some of the most ardently anti-gay politicians were ardently anti-gay for rather dubious reasons. Here is a case of at least one who confirms my suspicions. Jim West, a Republican mayor of Spokane, WA has taken a leave of office to work out some issues. He is accused of having sex with men he met on-line, offering jobs to on-line tricks and even child molestation. West was known for being anti-gay rights when he was a state legislator. Talk about self-loathing assholes.
According to a Spokesman-Review article the former Senate majority leader co-sponsored a failed bill in 1986 that "would have barred gay men and lesbians from working in schools, day-care centers and some state agencies. It called for screening prospective employees for sexual orientation and firing employees whose homosexuality became known." Yet another article claims that "for a quarter century, the man who is now Spokane's mayor has used positions of public trust – as a sheriff's deputy, Boy Scout leader and powerful politician – to develop sexual relationships with boys and young men."
West acknowledged he’d recently begun to seek out young men on the Internet and said he couldn’t explain why. “I don’t want to go into the whole issue, but I wouldn’t characterize me as ‘gay,’.” He blames “sex Nazis” who try to regulate private sexual behavior. Isn't that exactly what his 1986 legislation would have done if it had not been defeated?
