"Beware of the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and theblood boils with hate and the mind is closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and do it gladly so. How do I know? I know for this is what I have done. And I am Caesar."
~ Julius Caesar (101-44 BC)
I have become a recent addict to Rome, the now ended series on HBO. I know the above quote is from Julius Caesar, but watching the trials and tribulations of Caesar Octavian on HBO while following the trials and tribulations of George W. Bush on CNN and MSNBC brings to mind a lot of disturbing similarities. One can actually start to think that the Imperial Bush fancies himself somewhat of an emperor of the republic more so than president of our country.
Caesar Octavius came to power only because of his adopted father Julius Caesar, who was actually his uncle, and his circle of friends. George W. Bush came to power only because of his father George H. W. Bush, and his circle of friends.
Caesar had nothing but contempt for and disregarded the Roman Senate. Bush has nothing but contempt and for and disregards the US Congress.
Ceasar had his Triumvirate consisting of himself, Marcus Aemilius Lepidus, and Marcus Antonius. Bush has his triumvirate consisting of himself, Dick Cheney and Karl Rove.
Caesar had only disdain for and showed mild concern for the plebeians only to maintain peace in Rome, while helping the patricians to accumulate great wealth. While the masses starved and begged for morsels from the grain stores, Caesar and his wealthy friends ate, drank and lived in luxury. Bush has only disdain for the poor and working class while faking a good old boy, down south accent to appear to be one of them. Meanwhile he helps the rich to become even richer at the expense of the working class.
Each day that George ignores the will of the voters; disregards the Constitutional role of Congress; violates the constitutional rights of US citizens; lies to and misinforms the media and continues an illegal and illegitimate war in Iraq to help the rich become richer the similarities become more and more scary yet hard to hard to ignore.
