It's not as big as mine, but this is where I get my inspiration (or addiction) from. My mom, my sisters and I all have many of the same ornaments as we buy them for each other and often get one for ourselves too.
My one sister has a small "country" style (I call it Charlie Brown-esque) tree and she does not have as much room for ornaments. I have the colossal tree and have/need the most ornaments. But the funny thing is, like my mom, I can pretty much tell you the story behind each ornament... From the tin ornament that held candy, which my grandfather bought me at the Copper Kettle Candy Kitchen when I was five years old... To the ornaments that my friends Juan, Paul, Jerry and Alex gave me the last two years.
My style of decorating the tree is rather eclectic and I have no theme to the ornaments either in color, shape or style. I have handmade ornaments, figurines, novelty ornaments and various types of balls (glass and otherwise). There is always a bird's nest in the tree (good luck) and an elf hugging the top of the tree (something my folks and sisters also do).
One thing I miss from when were little kids is when my dad would build a platform under the tree and set up a train and village with fake snow and people and houses that lit up. I think I am going to try and find a picture of that.
I know my posts lately have been even more mindless and useless than normal. But at least I have been posting. What has been going on? And what is coming up?
On Wednesday night I had my annual holiday get together. It was a first for having it on a weeknight, but I was late in getting ready this year and realized that to have it on a Saturday would have been competing with too many people's previous commitments. Also by the nature of always having them on weekends, I have excluded some of my friends who always work on the weekends. So for the most part it was the same people as usual albeit with a few subtractions and additions. I was very "chill" and it was a good way to prep me for the rest of my holidays. Spending quality time with quality people always makes me feel better. Several people who were at the party remarked that the first the felt the holiday spirit this year was at my party. Me too. And that made me feel good. So the over decorating worked (yes, it looked like the Christmas elves threw up all over my apartment again - though I did tone it down some as there was a whole box of stuff I did not put out).
Tomorrow morning I am off to Pennsyltucky for a week with my family. It has been a long time since I had a quality, long visit home so it is about time. I am going to be there for a week and will then head back to NYC next Saturday. I still don't have any New Year's Eve plans, though I do have one party invite. NYE plans normally fall into place last minute for me, if at all. It tends to be a holiday I have a love/hate relationship. I have had a lot of miserable NYE nights both out and about with others and alone at home. I think it all depends on my state of mind at the moment, which means it is far to early to predict how this years will turn out.
I don't mind staying in on NYE actually as I hate all the overly drunk "amateurs" that are out on the town being all sorts of obnoxious and getting a cab home is almost an impossibility. Plus, I am one of those nerds that actually likes laying on the sofa watching the Tournament of Roses Parade. I know... I am gay. But to make up for that, I follow it up with laying on the sofa all day watching Bowl games. So it ends up being a wash on the gay meter.
I have already uploaded my Christmas message with traditional vintage holiday postcard and it is programmed to be posted at noon on Christmas Eve just in case I do not get around to blogging much. But I am taking the laptop home with me (though my parents only have dial up and I have no dial up account) and I will have my iPhone with me. As I posted earlier, TypePad has a good webapp for posting via the iPhone and I have the top secret email programmed into the iPhone in case I want to post a pic or something (in fact, I will test that feature out shortly). So you may or may not see some posts from me.
In any event, I hope you all have a great, safe, enjoyable, peaceful holiday. And I cannot wait to ring in 2008 with you shortly (2007 is another of those years I cannot wait to flush away).
